The waiter can't believe it. He picks the guy up, beats the living daylights out of him, then throws him out into the street.

“The grass looks greener on the other side of the fence.” That's an old saying in English. It means that other places often look better, more interesting than the place where you live. Some people worry that young Chinese are beginning to feel that way. They see young Chinese ignoring Chinese culture and, instead, buying Japanese cartoon books, watching Korean soap operas and even celebrating western holidays.

Foreign books and soap operas are good, but Chinese writers and actors are just as good. As for holidays, Christmas is nice, but it can never have the meaning for Chinese that Spring Festival has, and the West has nothing to compare with Mid-autumn Festival. And let's not forget the part of Chinese culture I like best:its friendliness. Not all countries are as warm as China.

It's good to enjoy other cultures and to learn from them, but they can never replace your own culture. It's good to look on the other side of the fence, but make sure you take a good long look. You will find that the grass isn't always greener.

60.The author thinks young Chinese ________.

A. are foolish in learning our own culture B. are ignoring our own culture C. are interested in our own culture D. are hating our own culture

61.In young Chinese people's eyes, which of the following is NOT the “greener grass”? _________

A. Japanese cartoon books. B. Korean soap operas. C. Christmas D. The Mid-autumn Festival. 62.In the author's opinion, what is the best characteristic (特点) of Chinese culture?

__________

A. Friendly B. Hardworking. C. Brave. D. Honest. 63..What is the best title for the passage? __________

A. Chinese Culture and Western Culture B. Simple Young Chinese C. That Grass Not Always Greener D. Interesting Western Culture

To Lauder Exchange Program:

Gaia Filicori was a student in my Humanities class for the 2002—2003 year. From the first week of classes it was obvious that Gaia was an excellent student and a very sociable young lady. She was always eager to join in class discussion. Gaia’s ability to communicate her own ideas is a skill that many of us work for a very long time to achieve.

Gaia also has a deep curiosity about the world around her. The simple fact that she desires to spend a year in another country is proof enough. I have also seen her show this curiosity in class. She asked some of the most interesting and thoughtful questions of any of the students in her class. When others were content to accept a point, Gaia would see from a new angle that none of us had tried.

As a student in Humanities, Gaia was required to complete a group project. The project was to write a page for a Humanities textbook using text and multi-media. It was a challenging task and Gaia’s group was experiencing some difficulties. Yet, they had an easier time of it because they did not hesitate to come to me with their problems and try to work them out. As a result,Gaia and her group had one of the more successful projects. The ability needed to recognize a problem and ask for help to solve it will be of great value if she is selected to be a Lauder Exchange student.

Gaia’s interest in the world around her will serve her well as a Lauder Exchange student. The ease with which she gets along with others and the ease with which she makes new friends will also help her as she tries to learn in a foreign setting. I have no doubt that Gaia would be a wonderful representative of the Lauder Program,Stuyvesant High School, and the United States.

It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver’s seat is another matter.

Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense. It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand, a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting. A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of goodwill and calm so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behaviors of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don’t even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it. However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. Typical examples are the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may not be able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to. It always amazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodies of these grannies.

An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings. Unfortunately, modern drivers can’t even learn to drive, let alone master the roadmanship. Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.

72. The passage mainly talks about .

A. road politeness B. traffic jams C. good manners D. modern drivers 73. Troubles on the road are usually caused by .

A. traffic jams B. the behavior of the drivers C. great speed D. terrible road conditions 74. According to the writer,a good driver should . A. beat back when forced to face rude driving B. be able to recognize politeness when he sees it

C. encourage old ladies to cross the roads whenever they want to D. join in traffic stream quickly however other people feel

75. The underlined phrase “give rise to” in the last paragraph probably means . A. stand up B. arise C. rise D. cause
