Children in the UK receive a full- time education until they are sixteen. If they do not attend school, a government official will visit their home to ask why, and their parents might even be punished. Parents can send their children to state schools, where tuition and textbooks are free, or public school, where a fee is required. Most parents choose state schools for their children.
The school year begins in September and consists of three terms. There are three main holidays. These holidays take place at Christmas,Easter and the Summer. The summer and holiday is the longest and usually lasts from the middle of July to be beginning of September. There are also two half-term holidays.
Education is split into two main stages---primary school and secondary school. Primary schools are for students from age five to eleven. The subjects taught are maths, English, history, science, art, music, and PE, Secondary schools are for students from the age of eleven to sixteen, although some schools offer classes to students until they are eighteen. The same main subjects are taught as well as additional subjects such as economics, foreign languages (usual French or German), drama, technology, and computer studies.
Three important public exams are taken at the ages of eleven, sixteen and eighteen. After the age of seven, students can either find a job or go on to study in a sixth-form college(第六学院). Most students study for A Levels in six-form colleges, and go to university when they complete them.
71. All British children from age five to eleven must go to school. 72. Parents do not pay if they send their children to public schools. 73. There are two terms and three main holidays in the school year. 74. The underlined word split means “分开” in Chinese.

B.Choose the best answers. (根据短文内容,选择最恰当的答案) :(7分)
Going to a friend’s house can be exciting. You get to see where he lives and also get to spend some time with your friend. However, you should always remember to be polite.
The first thing to remember is that when a friend invites you over, you need to arrive on time. If your friend tells you to come “around 3:00”, that means you can turn up a little bit after 3:00. However, it is usually a good idea to arrive at the right time.
It also nice to take something to your friend’s house. This could be a box of chocolates for the two of you to share, or maybe a movie that you can watch together. You can also take some flowers. A little gift is a nice way to show your friend that you are excited about being at his house.
When you visit a friend’s house, you may also meet his parents. You should tell them who you are and they will tell you their names. As a child, I went to visit my friend Paul. I called his parents by their first names, John and Mary, about now I know more polite to call them Mr and Mrs Smith. This shows them more respect. They may tell you later to call them by their first names.
It’s cool to visit a friend’s house. Be polite to your friend and your friend’s parents, and you will be invited again.
78. If you are told to get to our friend’s house around 5:00pm.,it’s polite to
arrive at_____pm.
A)5:02 B)4:30 C)5:30 D)4:50
79. When you are invited to a friend’s house, you may take him some _____. A) money B)children and apples C)chocolates or flowers D)wine and meat 80. The passage mainly tells us _____.
A)when to arrive at a friend’s house B)how to great people C)what to take to your friend D)how to be a good visitor
In Canada and the United States, people enjoy entertaining(请客)at home. They often invite friends over for a meal, a party, or just for coffee and conversation.
Here are the kinds of things people say when they invite someone to their home. “Would you like to come over for dinner on Saturday night?” “Hey, we’re having a party on Friday. Can you come?”
文章来源:上海中考网http://sh.zhongkao.com 上海e度教育社区:http://bbs.eduu.com 7
To reply to an invitation, either say thank you and accept, or say you’re sorry and give an excuse:
“Thanks, I’d love to. What time would you like me to come?” or “Oh, sorry. I have tickets for a movie.”
Sometimes, however, people use expressions that sound like invitations but which are not real invitations. For example:
“Please come over for a drink sometime.” “Why don’t we get together for a drink sometime?” “Why don’t you come over and see us sometime soon?”
These expressions are really just polite ways of ending a conversation. They are not real invitations because they don’t mention a specific time of date. They just show that the person is trying to be friendly. To reply to suggestions like these, people just say, “Sure, that would be great!” or “Ok. Yes, thanks.”
So next time when you hear what sounds like an invitation, listen carefully. Is it a real invitation or is the person just being polite? 81. Which of the following is a real invitation?
A) If you are free, let’s go for a drink sometime. B) Please go to the cinema with me some day.
C) Would you like to have a cup of tea with me some day? D) I have two tickets here. Can you go to the cinema with me?
82. They are not real invitations because they don’t mention a specific time or date. Here means “______”in Chinese.
A)特别的 B)具体的 C)可能的 D)必要的
83. People say, “Please come for a drink some day.” That shows they are trying to ____.
A)be friendly B)be kind C)talk D)get ready for a drink 84. The passage is mainly about ______.
A)home entertaining B)real and fake(假的) invitation C)starting a conversation D)ways of ending a conversation

E:Answer the following questions. (根据短文内容回答下列问题): (14分)
Sam Gribley, a boy in his teens, ran away from his family’s crowded flat in New York, where he lived with eight brothers and sisters. He went to the wild Catskill Mountains to live by himself. He lived there for almost a year before he was discovered by the outside world. Here is part of his dairy showing how his adventure began. I left New York in May. I had some necessary tools and $4. I tried to get free rides from passing trucks to get into the Catskill Mountains. At about four o’clock, a truck driver and I passed through a beautiful dark forest, and I said to him, “This is as far as I am going.”
The driver looked around and said, “Do you live here?”
“No,” I said, “but I’m running away from home, and this is just the kind of forest I’ve always dreamed about, I think I’ll camp here tonight.” I jumped down from the truck.
“Hey, boy,” the driver shouted. “Are you serious?” “Sure,” I said.
“Well , now, isn’t that strange?” he said. “You know, when I was your age, I did the same thing. Only the different thing was, I was a farm boy and ran to the city, and you’re a city boy running to the woods. I was scared of (害怕) the city. Do you think you’ll be scared of the woods?”
“Oh, no,” I shouted loudly.
As I marched into the cool shadowy woods, I heard the driver call to me, “I’ll be back in the morning, if you want a ride home.”
He laughed. Everybody laughed at me. Even Dad. I told Dad that I was going to run away to Great-grand-father Gribey’s land. He roared with laughter and told me about the time he ran away from home. He got on a boat for Singapore, but when the whistle blew for departure, he ran down the gangway and was home in bed before anyone knew he had gone. Then he told me, “Sure, try it. Every boy should try it.”
