Unit 2 Environmental Protection

Section A Listen to the conversations and choose the right answers to the questions you hear.

Conversation One

W: Do you understand why the local people are opposed to the new dam up the river?

M: They are worried about the potential danger if the dam should break. The river is very wide above the proposed site.

Q: What do we learn from the conversation?(C)

Conversation Two

W: I really enjoy the TV special about the United Nations Environmental Summit last night. Did you manage some time to watch it?

M: Oh yes and I have never thought that I could stay up so late to watch a debate on such a serious topic.

Q: What does the man mean?(B)

Conversation Three

1

W: These summer days are getting to be more than I can take. It was even too hot to go to the pool yesterday.

M: You have to face the reality. According to the weather report we can’t have any relief for the rest of the week because of the impact of global warming.

Q: What does the man imply?(B)

Conversation Four

W:I finally understand that Giant Pandas don’t hibernate because bamboo can’t provide the fat they need in winter.

M: Things are getting worse in their homeland where bamboos grow into maturity slowly and used heavily by human.

Q: What does the man imply? (B)

Section B Listen to the dialogues and choose the right answers to the questions you hear. Dialogue One:

W: Hi Professor Smith. I hear you’ve written a book titled The Endangered Giant Pandas.

2

M: Yes. It explains why the national treasures are China at stake.

W: Could I ask you some questions concerning the book?

M: Sure.

W: What are some of the reasons you cover in your book?

M: The first reason is that Giant Pandas have a very short low reproductive rate. They have a short mating season when females will have only one or two cubs a time.

W: Are there any other reasons?

M: Another reason is habitat destruction. China has over 1 billion people. The huge population continues to explore more farms and build more cities and use more natural resources. As a result pandas lose their homes and are forced to move to the mountain regions.

W: Are these all the reasons?

M: Of course not. The last reason is hunting. When hunters set snares for other animals such as musk deer the traps kill giant pandas instead.

W: What a pity. What can we do to save the species know as living fossils?

3

M: There’s much we can do. Actually global joint efforts have already been taken. This will not only increase the number of the giant pandas but also ensure their future survival.

Q1. What is the dialogue mainly about? (C)

Q2. Which is not the reason why Giant Pandas endanger?(C)

Dialogue Two:

M: Today I'm interviewing nine-year-old Alex about her feelings on how people can help save the environment. So Alex how can we save the environment?

W: By saving water.

M: Well how can we do that?

W: By not using too much water when we wash dishes take a bath and when we do other things like watering the plants outside.

M: Oh I think I can do that. What else?

W: When drinking or eating something outside you should keep the garbage until you find a trashcan to put it in because littering makes our planet dirty. Do you like seeing trash all over the ground?

4

M: No I don't. Do you have any final suggestions?

W: Yes. We shouldn't waste paper because trees are being cut down to make the paper. By recycling paper we save the forests where animals live.

M: So how can children recycle paper I mean everyday?

W: Well for example when I was in kindergarten I used to save the newspapers so that I could make things make out of them like paper trees instead of just throwing them away. Now the children in our neighborhood collect newspapers once a month to take them to a recycling center.

M: That's great. Well thanks Alex for your ideas.

Q1: What is the dialogue mainly about?(D)

Q2: According to Alex why is it important to recycle paper?(D)

Section C Listen to the passages and choose the right answers to the questions you hear.

Passage One

How many times have you ignored the phrase \"reduce reuse recycle\"? What we need this Earth Day is a change in mind set. If you were to think of the Earth as your body for example you'd probably take better care of it. You'd want to wear

5

less garbage. You'd want to smell cleaner. And if trash were fat you'd definitely want to trim it.

Between 1960 and 2007 the average amount of stuff wasted per person increased from 2.7 pounds to 4.6 pounds per day. It's time for a trash diet! Reduce by choosing a washable glass instead of a disposable paper cup. Clean with a cloth instead of a disposable paper towel. Go ahead and buy the shirt but carry it out without the shopping bag. The trick here is to stop the fat before you put it on!

The part that says reuse is easy. You don't like to go around wearing small clothes you wore in elementary school. Why should you cover the Earth in them? Hand them down to your kid brother or sister or give them away to someone in need! Break out your old reusable lunch box instead of brown-bagging your food. Refill your reusable mechanical pencil. The more we reuse resources without buying stuff we don't need and trashing what's still good the better off our Earth is.

And as far as recycling goes your body recycles blood with each beat of your heart. Keep the world's heartbeat strong by recycling the materials you use! Take the paper to the recycle bin. Recycle your old cell phone or MP3 player. Don't throw cans in the can. And try to buy products made from recycled materials or packaging.

The point of trying to stay healthy is so you can feel better and live longer. Let's help the world do the same.

6

Q1. What would you not do if you were to think the earth as your body?(D)

Q2. Which of the following items is preferable as far as reduce is concerned?(A)

Passage Two

We hear it a lot in the news these days \"Recycle newspapers and save a tree. Collect bottles and cans so they can be reused in the manufacturing of new products.\"

Protecting our delicate environment seems to be on the agenda of politicians, government leaders and citizens in many parts of the world to show support for mother nature. The concept of green consumerism has gained momentum more and more over the last decade and the public feels moved to pitch in and help. However three essential keys needed to power this movement include a more informed public the development of improved technology and a greater demand for recycled materials.

Let's use paper as an example. In order to raise public awareness about the recycling process to explain the kinds of materials that can be recycled and provide ways on how to properly dispose of them ,local governments should educate the public on how to properly sort reusable materials from those like waxed paper carbon, paper plastic laminated material such as fast food wrappers that can't be recycled very easily. Then a system of collecting these sorted materials needs to be

7

established. The Public interest might be there but soon may wane if there isn't a system where they can take these materials to be recycled. Sometimes we become complacent when it comes to recycling but when you speak in terms of actual facts and figures that everyone can understand people become more cognizant of the problem. I remember reading one time that the energy saved from one recycled can provides enough power to operate a television for three hours. Give the public information they can grasp and then you will increase your chances of gaining followers.

Recycling is a crucial key to protect our planet. How to awaken public awareness is important to achieve this end.

Q1. Which of the following paper materials is difficult to recycle? (C)

Q2. Why is it important to establish a system to collect sorted materials? (A)

Section D Compound dictation

Directions: Listen to the passage three times and supply the missing information. Our environment is being polluted faster than nature and man's efforts can prevent it Time is bringing us more people and more people will bring us more (1) industry. These will bring us more motorcars larger cities and the (2) growing use of man-made materials. This is happening not only in advanced societies but also

8

among the developing nations as they become (3) industrialized. Now many scientists are worrying about the (4) possibility of world pollution. Some experts declare that the balance of nature is being so upset that the very (5) survival of human beings is in danger. What can solve this problem? The fact is that pollution is caused by man--by his (6) greed and his modern way of life. We make \"increasing industrialization\" our chief aim. For its sake we are willing to (7) sacrifice everything: clean air pure water good food our health and the future of our children. (8) There is a constant flow of people from the country into the cities eager for the benefits of modern society but as our technological achievements have grown in the last twenty years so in that time pollution has became a serious problem. (9) Isn't it the time we should stop and ask ourselves where we are going and why? It reminds one of the stories about the airline pilot who told his passengers over the loud speakers: \"I've some good news and some bad news. The good new is that we're making rapid progress at 530 miles per hour. The bad news is that we're lost and don't know where we're going.\"(10) The sad fact is that this becomes a true story when applied to our modern society. Section E Imitation and role play

Marshall: This is it.

9

Barney: One of 9000 convenient locations.

Marshall: It was right here. It was right on this very spot.

Robin: I don't understand. Where is the burger place?

Ted: It's not a burger place anymore it's a Goliath National Bank ATM.

Robin: Well that's fine. Let's just eat here.

Ted: We can't eat here. It's an ATM.

Robin: But food.

Barney: Ow! Ow! Hey what the...

Lily: This is your fault , you and your stupid bank. You did this.

Barney: It's not my... Stop okay. Stop it Lily.

Lily: I will never use a Goliath ATM ever again. Goliath National Bank sucks! It's the worst bank on the face of the earth. Attention New Yorkers this bank sucks! They suck! They suck suck suck!

Barney: Marshall will you just tell her already?

10

Lily: Tell me what? Tell me what?

Marshall: I got a job.

Lily: What? Where?

Marshall: Goliath National Bank. That's why Barney's been going on and on about how great Goliath is. He wanted you to be excited for me since we're gonna be working there together.

Barney: Well technically not together. You won't have access to my floor.

Lily: But you want to be an environmental lawyer.

Marshall: Yeah you know and I also want to be a Harlem Globetrotter and get paid in candy but... In the meantime I need a job and this is a really good one. It's great pay and there's good benefits and to be honest it gives me a reason to put on pants in the morning. You know I have my whole life to save the planet but right now I'm kind of really excited to wear pants again.

Lily: You've got great pants. I love you.

Marshall: I love you.

Ted: Robin no!

11

Robin: They're unopened.

Ted: Give it.

Robin: They're barbecue.

Ted: Give it!
